Shopping can be a really depressing experience for so many women, especially if you’re going through body changes that can come with pregnancy and postpartum. In this love your wardrobe series (Tips for Purging Your Closet) I aim to help you get over the stressors that can come from clothing and help you love your wardrobe again. So if you’ve purged your closet and are ready for some new pieces check out these 7 tips to make it a successful shopping trip!

How do you feel in your clothes? When’s the last time you went shopping? Mama, you deserve to treat yourself and feel good when you get ready in the morning! Make yourself a priority and create a wardrobe you love. I was at a point where I felt depressed getting dressed in the morning. A closet full of clothes that didn’t fit and didn’t make me feel great. I’d end up grabbing leggings and a basic top because it was easy and it fit, and went on with my day. But this was not doing anything for me!

After I recognized the slump I was getting into, and that I missed having clothes that made me feel good about myself, I made a change, and you can too! Clothing should make us feel good, and give us a great start to our day. Think about how your favourite dress makes you feel, or your favourite shoes or lipstick. Now think about how it could change your morning if you had a closet full of items that made you feel like this. Do yourself a favour and create a wardrobe you love!

Plan Ahead

You’re going to want to plan ahead to get the most out of sprucing up your wardrobe with a good shopping trip. Below I’ve listed some things you should think about, and a few extras to think about if you’re going to have your little(s) with you. Another thing to consider is customers service, especially if it’s been a long time since you’ve shopped, or you’re shopping for a new body type (pregnancy/postpartum). Finding a place with good customer service can make or break your shopping trip. They can make suggestions, grab you sizes, and talk you through anything you might be going through.

Bellies in Bloom is my number one choice for maternity/nursing/mom gear in Victoria because of their customer service and selection. They’re there for new mamas and used to all the hormonal things that can come with shopping for your changing body, and are so great about doing their best to make you feel great when you leave their store.

There are a few things you are going to want to think about:

  • How much time do you have to shop?
  • What stores do you plan on going to? Consider putting items on hold in the first stores you visit so you don’t make purchases until you’ve seen everything.
  • Know your budget.
  • Know what’s in your closet and what you are looking for when clothes shopping.
  • Don’t eat a huge meal beforehand. No one wants to feel bloaty while shopping!
  • Try and line up childcare and know your time limit for being out.

If you’re bringing your kiddo(s) there are a few extra things you should plan:

  • Bring snacks and entertainment for them.
  • Consider having someone come along to amuse your kids while you’re in the changeroom.
  • Plan at least one stop in the middle or at the end of your shopping trip for them to run around and play, and perhaps purchase something just for them.

Get Ready

Getting ready will make a big difference with how you feel in that change room. If you go shopping feeling frumpy and half put together, chances are you’re not going to feel so hot while trying on new clothes. Take a bit of time and do your hair and makeup, and wear comfortable clothes that you can easily change in and out of. I prefer black leggings and a black fitted top because if I’m in a rush I can quickly try things on over my clothes, especially great for when you’re shopping with kids!

  • Wear black leggings and fitted top.
  • Do your hair and makeup.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.

Take Your Time

Take your time and slowly go through the store. If you feel rushed you’re not going to have a good shopping trip. Grab as much as you can and try on everything.

If you have your kids with you, you’ll have to be a bit more strategic. In that case I recommend speedily going through the sections that speak to you most and asking staff if you’re looking for something specific. You may end up missing something, but it’s worth it for your sanity.

Try Multiple Sizes

Before you head into the change room you need to drop any emotional feelings towards the number on the tag. A number does not define you. How you feel in your clothes is so much more important than whatever that number says. If you really struggle with this try and think of it this way: You’re going to feel a hell of a lot better in something that fits you and is comfortable, rather than squeezing into a smaller size and being self-conscious or uncomfortable.

Grab the size you think you might be and a size up or down (or both) to try. This is especially important if your body has been going through any motherhood changes. You may think something fits and looks good, but when you try the other size it could change your mind because it fits and looks even better. Be open, and focus on how things make you feel.

Be Open to New Things

Another thing to be open to is different styles. Try on things you wouldn’t normally try, it’s not like you have to buy it and you might be pleasantly surprised.

On my recent maternity shopping trip to Bellies in Bloom I tried on the overalls featured in this blog post just for the heck of it (details below). I honestly didn’t think I’d be that into them, but I fell in love! They’re honestly the best piece of clothing I’ve purchased in years. They’re sooooo comfortable (I never have to pull them up!), have lots of pockets, and they look super cute!

Ask Questions

Store staff are there to help you. They know what’s in their store, and they’re great at helping people find what they need. Utilize them! Below are a few things you may want to ask them:

  • Will this stretch out?
  • Can you order different sizes or colours?
  • Do they have suggestions of what to wear it with?
  • Did you not see something you’re specifically looking for? Ask them if they have it. You may have missed it, or it may be coming in soon.

You Think You’re Ready to  Say Yes

So you’ve tried on everything and you think you’ve found your winners. To avoid buyers remorse consider the below questions when you’re making your final decisions.

  • Is this flattering/does it fit well?
  • How does this make me feel?
  • Do I already have items similar to this?
  • Can I make at least 3 outfits with this using pieces from my existing wardrobe/new purchases?
  • Does this fit in my budget?
