I used to struggle with having a regular morning routine. I’d sleep in, have 20 minutes to rush out the door, and would end up feeling frazzeled and tired as I got into work. Since implementing these things into my morning routine I now feel awake, relaxed and ready to take on the day.

All of these tips are practical things that the average person can easily incorporate into their routine. It may be a lot to try and add everything into your routine all at once, but you will notice a benefit even if you only add a couple items. Once you feel comfortable and have noticed some benefits try adding more things into your morning routine until you’re happy with how things are and feel ready to take on the day.

Prepare the Night Before

Starting your morning off right starts with preparation the night before. Prepare as much as you can to make it nice and easy for yourself when you’re first waking up. I like to have my outfit planned, lunch made, and have an idea of what I’ll make for breakfast.

Get Enough Sleep

As I mentioned in my Tips for Improving Your Life in the New Year post getting enough sleep is so so important. When you’re well rested you’ll feel ready to take on the day. Your rested brain will work more efficiently making you more productive throughout the day. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is getting your 7 – 9 hours of sleep EVERY night will make HUGE improvements in your life.

Stretching is a great way to wake up your body and get your circulation going. It also improves posture and is a great way to check in with your body – added bonus, it feels really good too! You can stretch on a yoga mat, or by my preferred method of stretching while still in bed.

I’m sure you’ve been hearing a lot about mindfulness and it’s many benefits. I find it best to incorporate 10 – 20 minutes in the morning to meditate – and yes I do it while still in bed! It calms your mind and centers you so that you feel relaxed and present. I used to wake up and immediately start stressing about my never ending to-do list and all of the things I had to accomplish in the day. Since starting my month of mindfulness – only on day 3 – I’ve already noticed a big difference with how calm and centered I am. Stay tuned for a full mindfulness post coming next month!

Quote on Mirror

Having positive quotes and/or affirmations on your mirror, or anywhere you’ll see it helps give you that boost of positivity and motivation in the morning, You can find quotes on Pinterest, Instagram, We Heart It, and even Google. Print them out, or write them and paste them wherever you will look first thing in the morning. You can post them on your mirror, on your coffee maker, by your purse, or on the visor of your car.

Hot Lemon Water

Many people, including myself swear by drinking a glass of hot lemon water every morning. Some of the many benefits of lemon water include improved digestion, improved skin, improved immunity – I very rarely get sick – it detoxifies, strengthens the liver and so much more. Plus, if you replace 1 morning cup of coffee with hot lemon water imagine all of the calories you will save over a whole month!

Eat Breakfast

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day yet many of us still skip it, or rush and don’t have a nutritional breakfast. Feed your brain and kickstart your metabolism with a nutritious breakfast. If you’re too busy in the morning to make a breakfast plan one the night before, or better yet prep a week’s worth of overnight oats on Sunday. I used to prep my breakfast and eat it in the car during my commute. Do what you gotta do, but make sure you start your day off right with a healthy breakfast. If you need some inspiration you can find tons of healthy breakfast recipes on Pinterest.

Plan Your Day

Take a moment to prioritize and clear your brain by writing out your to-do list for the day, or filling out your planner. Incorporating this into my morning routine has also helped lower my stress in the morning. Instead of going in circles thinking and stressing about all of the things you have to do, you can dump it all on paper, prioritize it, and set yourself up for success to get everything done during the day.

Give Someone a Compliment

Give one of the first people you see a compliment. Whether it’s your partner, your mom, a barrista, or someone in line next to you, they will appreciate the sentiment. Not only does it make you feel good and start your day on a positive note, it helps boost their mood in the morning leaving a positive ripple effect. So go ahead tell your bf he looks hot in those pants, or let your mom know you appreciate her having tea ready for you in the morning, or let the barrista know her hair looks fabulous today. Pay it forward and send out those positive vibes first thing in the morning.

Listen to an Audio Book

Rather than listening to music you’ve heard a million times and is littered with ads expand your mind by listening to an audio book during your morning commute. If you love mystery and adventure try a best selling novel, or if you’re like mike and want to continuously work towards something try a motivating self help book like the ones in my #BossBabe Reading List.
