How to Plan For Your Week

We all like the idea of being organized and staying on top of our to-do lists, but it can be really hard to actually do. I’ve had an on and off relationship with planners for years, but I feel like I’ve finally found my groove in the last few years and feel like I’d be lost without my planner now. I’ve had many people ask me about my system, and I like to compare notes with one particular friend who shares the love of planning with me, so I thought I would bring you tips for how to plan for your week.

This overall system is one I’ve continuously tweaked over the years but feel like in the past month I’ve hit the sweet spot when it comes to incorporating my weekly plan with my weekly meal plan. So if you feel a little lost when it comes to planning, or have found it hard to actually stick with it, you’ll probably find these tips really helpful to plan for your week.

I had originally planned on adding a video to this post just like every other Saturday, but I had some technical issues and decided to keep it to just the blog post. There will be a nice fall makeup tutorial coming next Saturday though so stay tuned!

How to plan for your week and actually stay motivated to use your planner.

Setting Up Your Planner

First, write down all of the things that need to get done at a certain time, like meetings, zumba, and dinner with the family. Then use your to-do list and plug in the things you would like to get done for the week, like meal prep, making a new fall recipe, and organizing your closet. You can use the same pen or pencil for all of these things, but I like to colour code my planner: green for client stuff, pink for blog stuff, blue for personal stuff, and purple for fitness.

I also like to leave space on the side of my planner to write down things I need to get done, like confirming a dinner date, sending an email, or cleaning the bathroom. You could also use a post it note if your planner doesn’t have room for notes on the side.

  • Write down all of your must do’s
  • Plan to do the things you would like to get done
  • Leave a note section

Beautify Your Planner

This part is totally optional, but I like to beautify my planner with some stickers.  I’m a colourful person and I find that using colourful cute things gives me a smile and makes me happier overall, so bring on all the stickers and coloured pens! I use the Productivity sticker pack from The Happy Planner. They have lots of different sticker packs, or you could use any kind of stickers or washi tape.

The kinds of stickers I put in my planner are:

  • Cute ones with quotes
  • A top 3 sticker for goals of the week
  • Home to do list
  • Appointment stickers

Plan Your Meals For Your Week

After you know what you’re going to be up to for the week, you can make a basic plan for food. I used to write out meals and grocery lists without tieing it into my planner but would find that on busy nights I wouldn’t make the food that I had planned, and things would end up going bad. Now that I tie in my meal planning with my planner I find that way less food goes bad, and food prepping also really helps (let me know if you’re interested in a post like that).

I used to have a template I made on excel for planning meals and groceries, but now I’m happy to have them right in my planner. You either need 2 sheets of paper, or The Happy Planner has a household pack that includes these sheets. The first sheet should be broken down by day, then by breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Your second sheet is for your grocery list. Split that into grocery departments like produce, dairy, bakery, canned goods, frozen, etc. As you fill in your meals, you fill in your grocery list at the same time.

Once done I like to take a picture of my grocery list to save it on my phone. Then when I’m at the grocery store I use the built-in sketch app to cross items off as I pick them up while shopping.

  • Have 1 sheet for meals split into the days of the week, and 1 sheet for groceries split into grocery departments
  • Plan your meals based on how you’ve planned your week
  • Fill out your grocery list while writing down your meals

Stick to The Plan

The hardest part of having a plan for your week can be actually sticking to it. It’s easy to write things down in a planner and make it look all cute, but the difficulty can be actually doing what it says. Trust me, I’ve been there! Here are some helpful tips to actually stick to your plan for the week:

  • Keep your planner with you. I always bring mine in my purse.
  • Write down appointments as soon as you make them.
  • Leave it open at your common places. This could be your work desk, or perhaps on your kitchen counters, by where you make tea, or on your coffee table.
  • Check things off as you complete them.

This is a nice system you have going. I use a Panda planner for work and it works wonders. For home, I am still struggling a little, but I have some planner from Amazon I bought last year (!) and that I finally started using. Yeah, I know 🙂
