How to Make a DIY Succulent Garden

Greenery is a great way to bring nature into your home, but sometimes it can be hard to keep our plants alive. Succulents are a great starter plant because they prefer to stay dry and have higher chances of survival if you are forgetful in watering them. So if you love plants, but don’t quite have a green thumb just yet, try making a cute DIY succulent garden.

Choosing a Planter and Soil

Succulents prefer dry roots and favour a container with good drainage. Although it is preferred for easier maintenance, it is not an absolute must. If you are in love with a pot without drainage holes place about an inch of pebbles at the bottom to help with drainage.

You also need to get the right kind of soil to keep the roots dry. Potting soil holds too much moisture, instead you want to make sure you are getting cactus soil which is available at most nurseries and hardware stores. Succulents will collect all of the water they need quite quickly and the cactus soil will allow the moisture to drain and evaporate so they don’t rot.

Arranging Your DIY Succulent Garden

Take your time and play around with the arrangement of the succulents in your container before planting them. Below are a few things to consider when making your arrangement, and you can check out my succulent garden Pinterest board for more ideas.

  • Do you want it to be full or more spaced out
  • Have one big piece and work your way from that
  • Play with different heights
  • Stick with 2 – 3 different colours

Once you’re happy with your arrangement you’re ready to plant!

Planting Your DIY Succulent Garden

  1. If working with a container without drainage holes place pebbles at the bottom of the container.
  2. Pour a layer of soil over the pebbles, or along the bottom of the container.
  3. Place your succulents where you would like them and pour the soil around the plants.
  4. You may choose to do a thin top layer of pebbles to create a certain kind of look.

Tips for Caring for Your Succulents

  • Place your DIY succulent garden in an area with lots of light.
  • Do not spritz your succulents with a spray bottle. They will be healthier with small amounts of regular watering.
  • Always air on the side of underwatering than overwatering, and adjust from there.
  • Soak the roots then allow the soil to be completely dry for 1 – 3 days before watering again.
  • Water based on soil dryness rather than a set watering schedule. Succulents without drainage will likely need to be watered less frequently.
  • Use a measuring cup so you can make sure you are watering consistently and can adjust appropriately if needed.
