As we all know we are living busier and busier lives. We try to live a healthy lifestyle, but when we’re caught up in the hustle and bustle it’s easy to fall into the convenience trap of easy to grab snacks with hidden not so good things, rather than eating healthy snacks on the go. Yes those easy to grab snacks are so convenient, and you may think they’re just a small snack, but stop to think about it for a bit. How often are you going through a drive through? How often are you grabbing a quick energy bar or juice while on the go? Have you actually checked those labels, or are you trusting the healthy marketing messaging on the packaging?
When you stop to think about it and take the time to view the nutrition facts you may be surprised that your occasional snack grab is actually a few times a week, if not most days, and that those “healthy snacks” you’re grabbing on the go are actually made by tricksters with fancy messaging and they contain ingredients that aren’t doing anything for you. If this isn’t you, then wahoo, you’re doing an awesome job! Leave us a comment below to tell us your wisdom 🙂 But if this does sound like you check out the 7 tips below to help you make healthier choices while eating on the run.
I reached out to Jusu Bar recently and was so happy to hear that they were interested in partnering with me for this post. Avoid The Drive Through
This is a bit of a no brainer, but you aren’t going to find anything healthy from a drive through, and that includes that Starbucks loaf and Tim Horton’s yogurt parfait. Any food that you can grab on the go through a drive through is highly processed with lots of sugar and mystery ingredients. Just don’t do it, take the time to plan ahead or run into a store or cafe.
Look For Something Plant-Based
When you’re busy on the go you need food that will fuel your body and help you tackle the day. Look for foods that contain lots of fruits and/or veggies that are packed with vitamins and nutrients to help power your body. Alternatively snacks that are high in sugar and artificial fillers are only going to slow you down by making you feel sluggish during or after digestion.

Look For Filling Ingredients
Look for foods with filling ingredients. These should be whole foods. Things with seeds and nuts are great for keeping you fuller longer.
One of my favourites is things with chia seeds. They’re great at holding you over until your next meal and they come nutrient packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, omega 3’s, fibre, and protein.
Look For Drinks That Pack a Punch
Grab drinks that are jam-packed with good for you ingredients and skip all of the added sugars and other nasty ingredients. You want to look for drinks high in vitamins, made from whole foods, with no added sugar.
Lately, I keep a few Jusu Bar juices in my fridge. When I run out of the door and know I’m not going to have time to eat well while I’m out and about I grab a Jusu juice to keep me powered throughout my errands. They’re made entirely from whole, organic foods and are packed with an insane amount of vitamins while only containing naturally occurring sugar.
If you couldn’t already tell from the list, it’s so important to read those labels! When we’re on the go and looking for a healthy snack to eat it’s easy to just grab something without giving it a second thought, but you may be surprised by what’s in the ingredient list.
My rule of thumb is that I should be able to picture all or most of the ingredients as a whole food. I know what apples, carrots, oranges, turmeric, and lemon juice looks like, but I don’t know what sodium benzoate and colour look like. I’ll pass on the gingerale that doesn’t even include ginger in it’s ingredient list, and opt for a Jusu Bar juice that contains whole foods with 213% vitamin A and a third of the sugar content, all of which is naturally occurring in the fruit and veggies.
The main things you want to look for are:
- Whole food ingredients
- Packed with vitamins
- No added sugar, or sugar coming from whole natural sources – I feel better about eating/drinking something that contains cane sugar or honey over glucose-fructose and corn syrup.
Pack Food With You
This one can be easier said than done, but take the time to bring some food with you. When you have food with you you’re much less likely to drive through the dreaded drive through or grab a crap filled energy bar.
If you take the time to plan your meals and prep your food for the week you can prepare/purchase some snacks and drinks so you can easily grab them when you’re running out the door.

Find Go To Brands You Love
Once you’ve done your research you’ll find a few go-to brands that you love and can trust. That way when you’re in a pinch you can quickly pop into your favourite snack/juice bar, or reach for your favourite brand at the store.
For a long time, I’ve reached for a Jusu Bar juice while on the run. They’re a brand that I know I can trust to always give nutrient-packed, organic food that is created to fuel the body. They are a quickly growing company with locations in Victoria, Vancouver, and Calgary. If you’re in the area I highly recommend checking them out next time you’re looking for a healthy snack to eat on the go.
I encourage you to take a little bit of time to think about the choices you’re making with eating on the go and opt for the healthier choice by using some of these tips.
