Diaper Bag Essentials – Everything You Need to Get Out of The House For The Day

Every new mom knows they need a diaper bag, but what exactly should you put in it? After some trial and error, and over packing and under packing I feel like I’ve found a pretty good system so I wanted to share it with you! I use all of the diaper bag essentials on a regular basis, and during blowout emergencies and spit ups I have gone through all of the clothes, but never ran out.

This list is based on a day-long outing when you can expect to be gone from the morning until the evening. You can adjust as you see fit depending on how long you are planning to be out, how messy/not messy your baby is, etc.

Everything starts with the diaper bag itself. I love my Timi and Leslie for stroller outings or going to people’s houses. It is very large and has tons of compartments which help to keep everything organized. That being said, if I were to do it all over again I would’ve opted for a backpack style like the Freshly Picked bag from Bellies in Bloom which I’m absolutely obsessed with!

Learn what to pack in your diaper bag with these diaper bag must haves.

Diaper Pack

If you keep all of your diaper essentials in one small pack within your diaper bag it makes it easier to 1) find in your huge bag, and 2) grab and go as needed for changes, or for quick trips when you don’t want to bring your entire diaper bag.

Within it, I keep a diaper for every hour we’re out (a trick I learned from Millennial Motherhood’s Diaper Bag post!), butt wipes, and hand sanitizer. I also keep small cloths to cover him up during changes because Logan likes to pee everywhere once he’s free #MomLife, and dog poop bags to put dirty diapers and wipes in when I’m not close to a garbage. You can find diaper specific bags, but they’re totally overpriced, and dog poo bags do the exact same thing and are much cheaper! You’ll also want to keep your change pad with your diaper pack. Mine has some velcro so I’m able to wrap it around the diaper pack, but as long as you have it close by and it’s easily findable that’s what counts 🙂

  • Diapers – 1 for each hour, plus some more
  • Doggy Bags
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Bum Cream
  • Pee Pee Cover (small cloth)
  • Change Pad
  • Butt Wipes

Blankets

You’ll want to keep a few small blankets in your bag to use as a cover-up and to wipe up messes. I find light muslin swaddles to work best for covering up little legs in the stroller, etc. Receiving blankets are great for cleaning up messes, and it’s always handy to have a few small cloths for small messes and to wipe hands and faces after a messy eating session.

  • Swaddle Blanket
  • Receiving Blanket
  • 2 – 3 small cloths

Pack up your diaper bag essentials in different sections so you can easily find what you need for baby and you.

Clothing

Between blowouts, spit ups, and changes in weather it’s always a great idea to pack a few changes of clothes. I always pack 2 spare outfits for the same kind of weather and another outfit for if the weather changes. It’s also a good idea to have a spare sweater, socks, and a hat to wear if it’s sunny out or raining.

Dry bags are also a total lifesaver! You can put your blowout clothes in a dry bag and contain the mess while keeping everything in your diaper bag still clean. Dry bags are also great if you’re planning on going somewhere where their clothes might get wet or messy.

  • 2 Dry Bags
  • 3 Outfits – 2 for the same weather, and 1 for if it gets hotter/cooler
  • Sweater
  • Socks
  • Hat

Other

If you pump or formula feed you’ll need to bring bottles, and if your babe is eating solid food make sure to pack some snacks too. You’ll also want to have a couple of toys/teethers packed in your bag. Although, if you want to run light you could skip the toys as inanimate objects seem to be just as entertaining for babies 🙂

There are a few other items I never leave the house without including my Beluga Baby Wrap that I’ve already reached about a few times in my Stretchy Baby Wrap Review and 0 – 3 Month Essentials posts, and that’s because it’s such a GREAT item. It has saved me time and time again during meltdowns and when he needs a nap while on the go. The Beluga Baby Wrap specifically folds into a nice small package making it great to carry around in your diaper bag without taking up much room. If you’re interested in getting one, and I feel like every new mom should have one, make sure to use the coupon code “happystylishfit” for 10% off.

The Over Cover also comes in hand for so many different things which is why I also mention it in the 0 – 3 Month Essentials post. It’s a triple threat by working as a car seat cover, nursing cover, and a shopping cart cover, so I always make sure it’s in my bag.

  • Bottles
  • Baby Snacks
  • Baby Sunscreen
  • 2 – 3 Toys
  • Beluga Baby Wrap
  • Over Cover

For Mom

Once you have baby covered you need to make sure you have a few essentials for yourself! With always being on the go and taking care of the littles it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated and fed, and as a mom, it’s so important to fuel your body so you can keep up with all of your mom duties. Make sure to pack a water bottle and a few healthy snacks for yourself. I like to pack granola bars, coconut chips, or trail mix, but pack whatever you like that doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

You’ll also want to bring a small clutch or wallet with your basic essentials like your cards, cash, cell phone, keys, chapstick, pen, hair elastic, etc. I didn’t include a cell phone in the list below because I’m sure you won’t forget that, although with baby brain you never know!

  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks
  • Cards & Cash
  • Keys
  • ChapStick
  • Pen
  • Hair Accessories
  • Nail File & Clippers
  • Bandaids

This is a great list! Have you seen those backpack diaper bags that are like $40 on Amazon? They are all the rage here. They have zippers so you can get stuff from the bottom, and a cooler area for bottles! I might get one, and my youngest is 2!
